Computer Virus Scam
Soft Net Communications

While this company is too new to have developed any complaint experience, the BBB and other sources have received information which causes us concern.

Consumers have reported to the BBB and various sources, which are also illustrated in the internet article http://ivebeenmugged.typepad.com/my weblog/2012/02/windows-phone-scam.html, that telemarketers representing this business call customers claiming that they have received online notices or other information that their computers are infected with viruses or other malicious software. Representatives offer to clean their systems and to protect it for the lifetime of the computer for a fee of $300. Purportedly those who paid the company have received charges from Vertex and Phoenix Command LTD with a telephone number of (310) 599-9211. According to internet comments made on whocallsme.com, the public has received a number of similar telephone calls from that telephone number.

We are concerned that the website softnetcommunications.com is not fully functional, does not disclose the address of the business, claims to have started in 2010, but the website was created in December of 2011. We contacted the company on February 17, 2012, and requested their address and to discuss with us their relationship with Vertex and Phoenix Command. The company provided us a street address in San Jose, CA. Better Business Bureau has been unable to identify this address as a legitimate address. Better Business Bureau also asked how the company became aware that consumers' computers were infected. The company would only respond that it was their duty to inform consumers. The company did not disclose how it is connected to Vertex and Phoenix Command.

While some report that the company claims to be with Microsoft, that company has issued strong warnings about unsolicited telephone calls or emails for tech support at http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/msname.aspx

For the foregoing reasons, we believe you should exercise caution when dealing with this kind of offer.
